China’s Luxury Travel Boom: New Preferences Emerged

New research from Dragon Trail International reveals shifting luxury travel preferences among Chinese consumers.

A New Generation of Luxury Travelers

China's outbound luxury travel market is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Dragon Trail International's latest survey of over 3,000 affluent Chinese travelers reveals a decisive shift away from traditional shopping-focused itineraries toward experience-driven journeys.

The findings, released this week, show that 67% of high-net-worth Chinese travelers now prioritize cultural immersion and wellness experiences over luxury retail when selecting international destinations.

Shifting Priorities

Several key trends emerged from the data:

  • Wellness tourism is surging. Demand for spa resorts, wellness retreats, and medical tourism packages has grown 42% year-over-year among travelers aged 30–45.
  • Cultural depth over surface tourism. Travelers increasingly seek private guided experiences, cooking classes with local chefs, and behind-the-scenes access to cultural institutions.
  • Sustainability as a differentiator. 54% of respondents said they would choose an eco-certified hotel over a traditional luxury property, even at a higher price point.

Implications for Destinations

For tourism boards targeting the Chinese luxury segment, these shifts demand a rethinking of how destinations are marketed. Generic "shop and sightsee" messaging no longer resonates with the most valuable traveler demographic.

"Chinese luxury travelers today are more sophisticated and experience-hungry than ever," noted James Li, Dragon Trail's Head of Research. "Destinations that can offer authenticity and depth will win this market."

Methodology

The survey was conducted online in September–October 2025, targeting Chinese residents with household income above 500,000 RMB who had traveled internationally at least twice in the past 18 months. The full report is available to Dragon Trail research subscribers.
