As third-party cookies phase out, Dragon Trail shares strategies for data-driven marketing in a privacy-first world.
The Cookie Crumbles
The deprecation of third-party cookies is no longer a distant concern — it's the new reality. For travel and tourism marketers who have long relied on cookie-based tracking for audience targeting and campaign measurement, the shift demands immediate action.
Dragon Trail International has been working with clients over the past year to develop privacy-compliant alternatives that maintain marketing effectiveness. Here's what we've learned.
Strategies That Work
Our team has identified four pillars for effective marketing in the post-cookie landscape:
- First-party data collection. Investing in owned data — through loyalty programs, newsletter signups, and direct booking platforms — provides the most reliable foundation for personalized marketing.
- Contextual targeting. Rather than tracking individual users, contextual advertising places messages alongside relevant content. Our tests show contextual campaigns achieve 85% of the performance of cookie-based targeting at a fraction of the privacy risk.
- Server-side tracking. Moving analytics processing server-side gives brands more control over data collection while complying with regulations like GDPR and China's PIPL.
- Cohort-based approaches. Grouping users by behavior patterns rather than individual identifiers preserves personalization while respecting privacy.
Results from the Field
In Q4 2025, Dragon Trail ran A/B tests across three destination marketing campaigns comparing cookie-dependent strategies against privacy-first alternatives. The results were encouraging: privacy-first campaigns delivered 92% of the conversion rate of traditional approaches while achieving full regulatory compliance.
"The post-cookie era isn't a setback — it's an opportunity to build more sustainable marketing practices," said Thomas Chen, VP of Digital Strategy. "Brands that adapt now will have a significant competitive advantage."
